Connecting for Success

I'm preparing to teach a workshop to non-profit leaders on connecting with the community. I used to be a non-profit leader, so I understand how difficult it can be to start in a new community and try to connect with the influencers.

Connecting with others is such an easy way to build relationships in any field, but it takes effort. Whether you own a business, lead a non-profit organization, or work within a company connection is the key ingredient to your success.

Have you ever met someone that you did not connect with? You probably hated every second that you needed to spend with that person. They were probably negative, unfriendly, and small-minded. Spending time with these people drains our energy. If you can try to stay away from these people.

However, have you ever met someone that you instantly connected with? I bet you felt excited, happy, encouraged, and positive. These people can instantly put a smile on your face. They are 'lifters' that are constantly about seeing the best in people and love doing anything they can do to help you.

Connecting is the key in any industry or any field. Connecting with other people is what sets you up for success.

In John Maxwell's book Everyone Communicates, Few Connect he gives these tips on connecting one-on-one by making the other person feel valued:

  • Know what they value by being a good listener when you are with them.
  • Find out why they value those things by asking questions.
  • Share your own values that are similar to theirs.
  • Build your relationship on those common values.

In other words, people need to KNOW, LIKE and TRUST you in order to connect with you.
